What Is Threadlocker?
Screws and bolts that loosen over time can compromise assembly safety. Threadlocker is essential for preventing this problem. Widely used in mechanical systems, industrial machinery and automotive applications, these chemicals keep connections secure for the long term. They improve fastener security on vibrating machinery and in harsh conditions, helping prevent faults. Threadlocker simplifies assembly and reduces maintenance costs. Although fastening may seem a small detail, connection safety directly affects the efficiency and life of the whole system.

What Is Threadlocker and Why Use It?
Threadlocker is a chemical designed to prevent screws and bolts loosening over time. Usually supplied as a liquid or gel, it is applied between threads to make the connection stronger and more durable.
It is widely chosen for machines and industrial equipment where vibration creates a risk of loosening. It can also keep connections secure without corrosion developing over time.
Threadlocker Features
Threadlocker helps keep threaded connections from loosening, alongside correct assembly and torque settings. Adding oil is not a general way to increase strength. Consult the selected product’s instructions for surface preparation and oil tolerance.
Strength grade determines the operating temperature and removal method. Selsil lists maximum operating temperatures of +150°C for 3222, +230°C for 3272 and +200°C for 3290. Do not assume every threadlocker withstands 250°C or can be removed in five minutes. Hand tools may be enough for removable grades, while high-strength products may require controlled heating. Follow the instructions for both the product and connection.
- Secure fastening: Prevents fasteners loosening, provides sealing and supports safe assembly.
- Torque resistance: Improves resistance to torque in industrial machinery.
- Temperature resistance: Check the selected product’s technical information for its operating temperature.
- Easy application: A thin layer dries quickly and forms a strong bond.
- Corrosion protection: Prevents rust to extend connection life.
Types of Threadlocker
Threadlockers are divided into categories according to their strength:
3222 Removable Threadlocker: An excellent choice for vibration-prone fasteners of ¼” (6 mm) diameter or smaller, especially set screws and small adjustment fasteners that need easy removal.
3243 Removable Nut Threadlocker: Secures nuts and seals threaded connections prone to loosening under vibration. It offers improved oil resistance; follow its surface-preparation instructions before application.
3270 High-Strength Permanent Stud Retainer: Provides high strength in gearbox and engine block connections and valve assemblies without additional nuts or welding. It prevents wear and leakage and performs impressively on oily surfaces. Suitable for vibrating machines and joints between moving parts.
3272 High-Temperature Permanent Stud Retainer: Ideal for transmission fasteners and applications such as construction machinery and railway assembly. It lubricates for easy installation, prevents loosening and leakage, and joins and secures threaded connections, screws and nuts.
3290 Low-Viscosity Wicking Threadlocker: Suitable for sealing hairline cracks and small nuts and bolts. It bonds and seals rough metal parts; it does not weld by melting the metal. Removal uses heat or hand tools. Screws and other assemblies are secured once all adjustments are complete. It can be used to join vibrating machine parts or moving components.
Threadlocker Applications
Threadlockers are widely used across industries. They are particularly important in automotive assembly, securely holding engine parts, chassis components and interior fittings together. Their applications include:
Automotive
Threadlocker prevents loosening in vehicle engines, chassis and other mechanical sections.
Construction
Threadlocking supports the durability of buildings and infrastructure projects.
Electronic Equipment
Threadlocking solutions secure computers, phones and electronic components.
Industrial Machinery
Threadlocker prevents vibration-related loosening.
Medium-Strength and High-Strength Threadlockers
These grades differ according to application and strength requirements. Medium-strength threadlockers are ideal for low- and medium-load applications. Their removability makes maintenance and repair easier.
- Medium-strength grades: Suitable for removable applications requiring less force.
- High-strength grades: Ideal for lasting assembly with more difficult removal.
